Line Definition
A line represents a 'path' between two points, and can be presented in 6 different ways; horizontal, vertical, straight, curved, diagonal and zigzag. Considering that the lines can be presented differently means that lines can imply motion and suggest a direction or an orientation. Additionally a line can also be implied and then filled in by the mind when several points are positioned in a specific way within a frame, although, lines that imply motion including direction or an orientation can then imply certain feelings. for example ;
Horizontal lines imply tranquillity, peace, stability and harmony
Vertical lines imply power and strength
Diagonal lines imply movement, action and change
Curved lines or S Shaped lines imply quiet, calm and sensual feelings
Lines that converge imply depth and scale
Lines are an effective element of design because it can lead the viewers eye.
My Interpretation
A line is something that is able to lead the viewers eye, and creates a 'path' and has different ways of being presented, either creating direction or an orientation.
Horizontal Line
The steps convey a message of stability and peace, as there is nothing on the steps to cause a disruption. Additionally it creates the sense of unknown as we don't know where the steps have led from or lead to.
Vertical Lines
The pathway between the trees implies the tress have power as anyone or anything that goes through there is going to be smaller. Therefore it shows the power and strength of nature.
Diagonal Lines
The stairs indicate a direction either upwards or downwards, however it also creates a sense of uncertainty as there is no indication of where the stairs leads to.
The diagonal lines creates a sense of confusion and movement as they are going in different directions, and there are a multiple amount of them. Additionally the ones at the front of the photograph are focused which gets the viewers eyes attention which will lead them as the less focused ones don't catch the viewers attention as much.
Curved Lines
The curved path indicates a sensual feeling as well as a calm environment as it is going through a natural environment in an everyday life, also the curve indicates the sense of direction into the forest.
Converging Lines
The tight alley way implies depth and scale as if you were to walk through you would feel intimidated as it is a confined space, in addition the fact that they converge will make you think when does the path end?
