Tone Definiton

Tone Definition

The tone of something means the lightness or darkness of an object or building or even a landscape. this could be a shade or how dark or light a colour appears. Tones are created by the way light falls on 3D object. This means that the parts of the object on which the light is strongest are called highlights and the darker areas are called shadows. Between highlights and shadows there will be a range of different tones. Without tone form does not exist.

My Interpretation

Tone is the different shades within a image, as if something is shaded the shadow will be darker and the other part of the image/photograph will be lighter which will be referred as the highlights, and between the highlights and shadows there will be a variety of other shadows, which Ansel Adams zone system shows.

Ansel Adams developed the zone system which is a method ensuring he achieved the correct exposure;

This is the diagram showing the different tones, with 0 being pitch black and 10 being pure white.

  1. please refer back to the task list for this session as there is a requirement for you to identify different tones in the portrait images of Damon Albarn (from the band Blur) and Marilyn Monroe using A. Adams zone notation. ask discuss how lighting (hard vs soft affects portraiture).
